Fabulous Books, Fantastic Places brings together a whole series of events and projects centered around the artist’s book and the North East region.  The blog  records events and book related activities during  the Festival of the North East and BALTIC Artist’s Book Fair June 14th & 15th 2013.  Check out the blog for an in-depth look at the participants work and exhibitors at the fair.

The Ouseburn Valley, a 10 minute walk from the city centre and 5 minutes down the hill from Byker’s Shields road is the citys cultural quarter. Running throughout the weekend of Creative Ouseburn, part of the Festival of the North East, are a series of  creative activities based on the valleys rich history and creative present.  Join in an interactive trail, have a go at printmaking, try your hand at glass painting.  Come along and discover your own creative side.  Take the quest and find out more about your local heritage.  Ever wanted to try your hand at throwing a pot?  Making a book?

This weekend sees the creative partners of the Ouseburn valley such as Northern Print, Mushroom Works, Roots & Wings, Ouseburn Trust, 36 Lime Street, Seven Stories, Star & Shadow, Hoults Yard and many other provide opportunities to have a go.

APPLICATIONS FOR BALTIC ARTIST’S BOOK FAIR ARE NOW CLOSED.  If you would still like to get involved in the fair, check out The Sunderland Book Project or NEPN.

For two days only, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary art plays host to a national two day Artist’s Book Fair in collaboration with local Book Artist Theresa Easton.  Level 1 at Baltic becomes a market place of exhibiting book stalls and interactive exhibitions of book work.  There are opportunities to meet the artists, have a go at bookmaking, purchase and collect affordable artwork.

On Level  1 is Lucy May Schofield’s travelling Citreon Van (Dolores) and mobile library, home to over 150 artist made books and publications, offering a unique reading experience to anyone in need of a dose of handheld art.

Located in the Archive & Library on Level 2, is Yvette Hawkin’s collection of travelling suitcases The Book Apothecary.

Also, buried within the library shelves are a series of sculpted book work by students graduating from Cleveland College of Art and Design  in BA Applied Arts for Enterprise.

North East Photography Network (NEPN) showcase the vibrancy of contemporary photography book work.

The Sunderland Book Project comes to town and offers visitors the chance to explore the city through the medium of artist’s books produced by over 56 regional, national and international artists.

Sumi Perera, whose personal work features in collections including Tate Britain and the V&A Museum, brings to BALTIC’s Level 2 a collection of hand made artists’ books from Beijing, entitled 15:1.  Created at     Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) 2007, during a teaching visit there by Perera, the work explores experimental book structure and paper engineering.

Friday 14th June 10-12 Calligraphy Writing with Dr Manny Ling. (Booking details to be confirmed)

Dr Manny Ling is a world renowned calligrapher and he is an Honorary Fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society. He is a also Senior lecturer in Design at the University of Sunderland. His work is featured in numerous publications and he has exhibited in the UK, France, Finland and Australia.

This taster session will introduce you to the writing of calligraphy with a broad edged pen. You will be introduced to the main tools and materials for calligraphy. We will be exploring the Italic script with pen, ink and paper. The session will introduce you to the fundamental principles of calligraphy such as pen angle, proportion, rhythm, etc. The workshop will provide all tools and materials.

In this workshop Deidre will look at traditional methods of bookbinding that can be used to make notebooks or for binding of “artist book, using basic hand tools and looking at resources and materials.

Deidre Thompson is a stationery bookbinder.  She makes books to commission. These books have honest structures and made from good and true materials. Goatskin, linen thread, beeswax, colour pigments, marbled paper and rag paper.

Thompson makes books to record the celebration around a birth or a marriage, a book that honors a life or a death. Books for love and for hate.

Books that look like the way you feel inside.
