Free and open to the public, the NY Art Book Fair is the world’s premier event for artists’ books, catalogs, etc and I’ll be there this September, not only promoting The Sunderland Book Project, but also drumming up support for Beau Beausoleil’s project, ”Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here”.
Al-Mutanabbi Street, the historic center of Baghdad bookselling, holds bookstores and outdoor bookstalls, cafes, stationery shops, and even tea and tobacco shops. It has been the heart and soul of the Baghdad literary and intellectual community.
“Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here” is a collection of 130 broadsides – unframed letterpress prints and posters containing artwork and poetry — created by artists worldwide in solidarity with the victims of a car bomb placed on Al-Mutanabbi Street March 5 2007. 30 people were killed and 100 others were wounded . The exhibition is on a worldwide tour, and its proceeds will benefit Doctors Without Borders. After the tour, the broadsides will be donated to Iraq’s National Library in Baghdad.
The next stage of the coalitions project is Book Art.
The coalition asks each Book Artist who joins the project to complete three books (or other paper material) in the course of a year, books that reflect both the strength and fragility of books, but also show the endurance of the ideas within them. I am in the final stages of the printing & making my book and will post some documentation very soon.
