Don’t Judge a Book By its Cover is the current exhibition on show @Empty Shop 17, Claypath - Contemporary Art Space, Durham, DH1 1RH. The work on show presents work by final year students studying BA Applied Arts for Enterprise at Cleveland College of Art and Design. The students were given 8 weeks in which to create an ‘Artists book’ relating to their Dissertation research.
The work on display is as a broad interpretation of an artist’s book. Students have been able to confidently tackle the challenging concept of ‘what is an artist’s book?’ and created a cohesive and fluid exhibition showing depth and honesty.
I was struck by the choice and approach to the materials used, from ceramic bowls, copper pipes and acrylic. The work has a strong sculptural quality, with the most amazing attention to detail and clear consideration for the best display methods.
The exhibition preview last night was an excellent way to meet some of the students and talk to staff at the college, but the show is brief, with this weekend the only time to see the body of work. Students will be invigilating the show , so if you do make it along you will be able to experience your own personal guided tour of the work. If you can’t make the show, why not check out their blogs and see what else they are up to.
